Mobility aids distribution at Bolpur

Nopany Institute of Healthcare Studies (NIHS), established in 2004, is the first private Physiotherapy College in Kolkata. The institute initially launched with the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) program and later introduced the Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) in Orthopaedics and Neurology. It is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and approved by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal. NIHS operates a fully equipped physiotherapy clinic, providing both education and healthcare services.

Nopany Foundation, Kolkata, a charitable trust founded in 1993, aims to provide affordable education and healthcare. As the sponsoring trust for NIHS, it has supported numerous initiatives, including this year’s sponsorship of 79 mobility aids for the camp.

Modern physiotherapy treatments have proven to be essential for managing conditions such as age-related knee joint pain, spinal cord injuries, paralysis, musculoskeletal disorders, post-surgical recovery, and neurological issues. Regular physiotherapy and exercises are vital in preventing and managing these degenerative conditions.

NIHS has been committed to accessible healthcare since 2005. The institute celebrated its first World Disability Day that year by distributing free mobility aids to people with special needs and organizing the ‘Walk and Win’ event to promote equality for differently-abled individuals. From 2006 to 2018, NIHS collaborated with the Rotary Club of Calcutta Chowringhee, receiving support for its cause. Over the years, NIHS has conducted assessment camps across West Bengal, identifying and fulfilling mobility aid requirements. In 2024, two camps were organized.

Camp 1: Bhubandanga, Santiniketan, Bolpur

Phase 1 – Assessment (November 9, 2024)

NIHS partnered with the Nature for Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), an NGO dedicated to environmental conservation. A free physiotherapy camp was conducted at Bhubandanga, Santiniketan, Bolpur. Patients were assessed for physiotherapy conditions, prescribed exercises, and evaluated for mobility aid requirements. A total of 178 patients were examined, and 79 mobility aids were recommended.

Phase 2 – Distribution (February 1, 2024)

A distribution camp was conducted where 67 beneficiaries received their prescribed mobility aids. Two faculty members and one postgraduate student trained first-time users on proper usage and maintenance.
