2014

Phase 1

On 8th November, 2014, NIHS visited Murshidabad, a district town situated on the bank of river Bhaghirati was the Mughal capital of India named after the Diwan of Bengal, MurshidQuli Khan. In this historical place the first fight against the East India Company was fought by NawabSirajUdUllah. Mushidabad has many historical places to visit like Hazarduari, a palace of 900 real and 100 fake doors built in 1834 by NawabNazimHumayun Khan; NizamatImambara, a beautiful monument built in 1847 by NawabMansoor Ali Khan Feradun; Palace of Jagat Seth the banker of Nawabs and many more places, shrine, tombs.

Around 1 hour drive from Murshidabad, on the bank of river Baghirathi, a sub divisional town called Jangipur is located (253 km from Kolkata, West Bengal, India). It is named after Jahangir, one of the important Mughal emperor of India. This year NIHS along with NGO 'PATH WELFARE SOCIETY', organised their Free Physiotherapy cum Mobility Aids Distribution Camp (PHASE -1 ASSESSMENT) in this sub divisional town. Members from PATH included Ms Ruth Raju (secretary), Ms Poushali (dysecy) and members from Kolkata as well as Murshidabad. Faculty from NIHS were Dr Shabnam Agarwal ( Director education), Dr Tirthdeep Das, PG Students as well as the Administrative coordinator Mr Anupum Das.

PATH welfare society, works in the rural area of Murshidabad in close contact with the village people. They have detailed information of demography and social economic status of the villagers. PATH has been working in Jangipur for more than 3 year with people who live below poverty line. They provide free education by organising coaching classes to poor children and teachthe women of the villages how to cultivate a kitchen garden.

The assessment camp started at 9 am. By then, the patient registration had already crossed 40. The patients were screened by taking their photograph and referring them to respective Physiotherapists who assessed them in details. There were cases of Cerebral Palsy, Spinal cord injury, Amputation, Gomphosis, arthritis, deformities which were untreated, Deaf and Dumb, Partial Blindness. The registration soared up to 100.

Overall, the picture was slightly dismal. There was so much poverty and ignorance about diseases. So many patients who attended the camp came because the visit was facilitated by PATH Welfare Society. Most villagers were not aware of any treatment or did not have the means to visit a healthcare centre. Ordinary things like initial contractures had now become severe deformities. Untreated extremity fractures now appeared as hanging limb parts.

Besides work, the NIHS team managed to visit some of the historical sightseeing that area.

On 16th November 2014, the NIHS teamvisited Uluberia (50km from Kolkata), a small town located in the district of Howrah. The camp was organised by Rotary Club of Calcutta Chowrenghee within the campus of a special school. The school is taken care of, by the Rotary Club of Calcutta Chowrenghee. Patients from different organisations like AnandaBhavan, ICOD and Asha Bhavancenter attended the camp. The camp commenced from 10am and the faculty (Dr Anwesh Pradhan and Dr TanushreeBasak) and PG students assessed interesting cases ranging from Leg-length discrepancy, Cerebral Palsy, Delayed Milestone, Blindness, Rickets, Post-Polio Residual Paralysis, Malunion, Deaf and Dumb and Mental retardation.

In both camps, as per requirement different mobility aids were prescribed: Axillary Crutches, Gutter crutches, Elbow crutches, Tricycles, Wheel Chairs, Ankle Foot Orthosis, prosthesis, exercises and other necessary advice related to ergonomics.
