A Better Kolkata with pain free traffic Police

Nopany Institute of Healthcare Studies, Kolkata, has always been a front runner in providing a helping hand to any public initiative and community service. Continuing this tradition, the Department of Physiotherapy organized a Physiotherapy camp for Musculoskeletal (MS) pain for all Kolkata Police Traffic Guards at the institute premises. Initially, a questionnaire survey was conducted for all 22 traffic guard stations. There were 1080 traffic police guards who filled up the initial MS survey assessment form. 303 traffic police guards reported MS pain (neck pain, low back pain, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle pain). The second phase of the camp was conducted on 6th & 7th March 2020. A detailed MS examination of the painful joints was conducted by a team of professionals headed by Dr.Shabnam Agarwal, PhD (Director & Trustee of Nopany Group of Institutions) along with all Associate and Assistant Professors from the physiotherapy faculty of Nopany Institute of Healthcare Studies. All 303 police personnel were assessed, advised and counselled.

They were advised physiotherapy treatment & lifestyle modifications. Further, helmet weight and dimensions were measured to understand their impact on neck pain and headaches. Advice including exercises, ergonomics, general fitness; stretches, self-mobilisation were taught to them and printed home exercise prescriptions were provided to them.

This is the first time that a camp of this magnitude and specially for the Kolkata traffic police was conducted in the city, where the respondents included ALL the traffic guards of the city.

Very few cities in the world have done similar camps for Traffic police. Previous surveys of MS pain in Traffic police in Lahore and Navi Mumbai had maximum 270 participants. Lahore reported 65% prevalence of MS pain whilst 35% Navi Mumbai traffic policemen had Low Back Pain. Considering the workstyle of the traffic police, where they stand for long hours, with continuous arm and leg movements under a fair amount of stress, a camp of this nature was warranted.

Adl Commisioner of Police, Shri DP Singh explaining how citizens should appreciate the traffic policemen.

It was commendable on the part of the Commissioner of Police, Shri Anuj Sharma (IPS) to immediately agree to this kind of a proposal. Further it was actively pursued by Shri Akhilesh Chaturvedi (IPS) and Shri Santosh Pandey (IPS). The camp was inaugurated by Shri Devendra Prakash Singh, IPS, Addl Commissioner of Police (iii), Shri Santosh Pandey, Jt Commisioner of Police (TP) and Shri Rupesh Kumar, IPS (Dy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Dept). The effort and diligence in getting all police personnel to fill up the questionnaire was a true reflection on how the Kolkata police officials sincerely look after their forces.

The physiotherapy profession is geared towards not only treating lifestyle related diseases but also prevent them from occurring or worsening as the case may be. Interventions such as these camps aimed at improving the health profile of the Kolkata Police Traffic Guard.
